Tom Joyner was born on November 23, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Tuskegee University. Initially, he had a desire to become a musician. He joined the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to pursue his goal. He joined a band with his friend, but it didn’t prove to be successful. After this, his family motivated him to take another line for building a successful career.

He started his career in broadcasting in Montgomery, Alabama. During his early broadcasting career, he worked at various radio stations as St. Louis, Montgomery, and Memphis. In 1978, he shifted to Chicago where he hosted a morning show at WVON radio station. Within three months, he switched to its competitor WBMX-FM. In July 1978, he was employed by the GM of WJPC (now WNTD).

Soon, he was given two positions- one for the afternoon show at WGCI-FM in Chicago and other for the morning show at KKDA-FM in Dallas. He grabbed both the opportunities. In 1994, he was hired to host a nationally-syndicated radio show, titled Tom Joyner Morning Show by ABC Radio Networks. In 2005, he was introduced as an emcee for the show syndicated for one hour. The show gained immense success as it was heard live in more than 100 cities and became one of the top-rated radio shows.
