Liberty developed an interest in playing drums in 1964, after watching ‘The Beatles’ in The Ed Sullivan Show.

In late 1970’s, he started playing for Billy Joel, and worked with him for almost 30 years. In 2006, he was told to leave Billy Joel’s for an unknown reason.

He sued Billy Joel and Sony Music for royalty payments. He claimed that he was also the songwriter of some of Joel’s songs, but was never given credit for any of them. However, the matter was ‘amicably resolved’ in 2010.
