Liberty DeVitto is an American drummer and musician with a net worth of $15 million. He was born on August 8, 1950, in New York. He is popularly known as a drum-player for the songs of Billy Joel, with whom, he worked for 30 years. He has also worked with the NYC Hit Squad and other musicians. He is the father of Torrey DeVitto, an American actress and model.
Liberty endorses Pro-Mark drumsticks, Mapex drums, and Sabian cymbals. Previously, he did endorsements for Zildjian cymbals and Tama Drums.
He served as a drummer in numerous albums, composed by Billy Joel, such as The Stranger, The Burning, Songs in the Attic, 52nd Street, An Innocent Man, Spoiled Girl, Glass Houses, Storm Front, River of Dreams, Greatest Hits Volume I & II, Mick Jones, Greatest Hits Volume III, Queen’s Anne’s Revenge, and Fresh Socks.
Liberty developed an interest in playing drums in 1964, after watching ‘The Beatles’ in The Ed Sullivan Show.
In late 1970’s, he started playing for Billy Joel, and worked with him for almost 30 years. In 2006, he was told to leave Billy Joel’s for an unknown reason.
He sued Billy Joel and Sony Music for royalty payments. He claimed that he was also the songwriter of some of Joel’s songs, but was never given credit for any of them. However, the matter was ‘amicably resolved’ in 2010.
DeVitto is one of the members of Honorary Board of Directors and supporter of ‘Little Kids Rock’, an organization that offers free musical instruction and instruments to underserved schools in United States. He has personally distributed instruments to the children at several events, held by the organization.
