Les Gold is an American pawnbroker. He is also the patriarch of American Jewellery and Loan, which he opened in 1978. Born in 1950 in Detroit, Michigan, Les possesses a net worth of $1.5 million. His pawn shop is a 50,000-square feet building. It has 50 employees and serves approximately 1,000 customers every day.
In 2009, Les Gold started a reality show, called Hardcore Pawn, which features the daily operations, humour and conflicts between the customers and staff members. It basically portrays a picture of the pawn shop to the viewers. This reality series is broadcasted on truTV. However, it has also been acclaimed that some parts of the serial are scripted and staged, but Les denies it, saying that no part of the show has been staged.
Gold published his autobiography on June 1, 2013, named “For What It’s Worth: Business Wisdom from a Pawn Broker”. It describes his personal experiences, and gives details as how he set up his pawn shop.
Les Gold is an active philanthropist and supports “The Heat and Warmth Fund”, which provides financial aids to the local communities to pay their electricity bills. In February 2013, he also conducted a fund-raising party at his store “Hardcore THAW”, which raised more than $40,000 for the organization.
Gold started his career by selling pizzas to his school mates at the age of 12. In 1978, he opened his own pawn shop, ‘American Jewellery and Loan’ in Oak Park. Later, in 1993, he shifted his shop to the Greenfield Road, in Detroit. Now, it employs around 50 people and serves at least 1,000 customers, a day.
