Ilham Aliyev was born on 24 December 1961 in Baku, Azerbaijan. He obtained his post-graduation degree from Moscow State University of International Relations. In 1994, he was appointed as the vice president of State Oil Company of Azerbaijan. Within few years, he was elected as the member of National Assembly of Azerbaijan. He became the president of the National Olympic Committee. In 2003, he was elected to the position of Prime Minister. After the sudden illness of his father, he was appointed to replace his father. Fortunately, he won the election held in 2003, with 76.84% votes. According to Transparency International, his government has been titled as one of the most corrupt in the world. In 2012, Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project revealed that Aliyev’s family owns secret stakes in the country’s largest businesses, like gold mines, banks, construction companies, and phone companies.
In 2005, he was officially elected as the chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party.
