El Chapo’s Total Net Worth
Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo Guzman, is a former drug trafficker of Mexico, enjoying a net worth of $1 billion. He served as the head of the Sinaloa Cartel; an organization named after the Mexican Pacific coast state of Sinaloa. He used to manage drug trafficking between Mexico and the United States. The U.S. Department of the Treasury named him as “the most powerful drug trafficker in the world”. El Chapo smuggled drugs, like cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamines from Columbia to the United States.
El Chapo was born in the rural community in a poor family. His father was a cattle rancher. El used to sell oranges in his childhood for supporting the family. He was beaten by his father regularly and to escape such inhuman behaviour, he often fled to the house of his maternal grandmother. Gradually, he got engaged in opium poppy cultivation. But, his father spent the earned money on liquor. To give financial assistance to the family, El, along with his 4 distant cousins, began to cultivate his own marijuana plantation. He was thrown out of the house by his father when he was a teen. In the late 1970s, El Chapo got his first break in the drug industry by Hèctor “El Güero” Luis Palma, who gave him the responsibility of transporting drugs from Sierra to other cities. Later, in 1980s, Miguel “El Pedrino” Ángel Félix Gallardo made him the in-charge of logistics. He began coordinating airplane flights, trucks and boat arrivals from Columbia to Mexico. After Gallardo’s arrest, El Chapo eventually became the sole head of Sinaloa Cartel.
El Chapo’s Sinaloa Cartel is considered to be the most powerful and wealthiest drug cartel of Mexico. It smuggles cocaine from Colombia to the U.S. via road, sea and air. It also has distribution cells all over the United States. The cartel is also indulged in the distribution, smuggling and production of heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine. Through this cartel, El managed to become a billionaire.
El Chapo was first arrested on July 9, 1993, and on charges of bribery, drug trafficking and criminal association, he was sentenced to 20 years, 9 months in prison. But, with the help of a prison guard, he managed to run away from the jail in the year 2001.
He was re-arrested on February 22, 2014, by the Mexican authorities at a resort in Mazatlan. He was #1 most wanted person in the world. El Chapo’s arrest is a great success for both American and Mexican drug agencies.
