Carlos played college soccer at the University of California, Los Angeles. From there, he was signed to join the club Chicago Fire. He entered into a contract with Major League Soccer, called Project-40. Carlos, one of the top defenders of MLS, won the title of MLS Rookie of the Year and also the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
In 2004, Carlos joined Fulham where he became fan’s favorite and was nicknamed as ‘The Jackal’. He was signed by Rennes, in 2008, and appeared in thirty-eight league matches. In 2010, Carlos was purchased by Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne, reportedly for a fee of £400,000. He later played for Scottish Premier League side Rangers and Racing Santander. Recently, on July 1, 2013, he signed for MLS club Chivas, USA.
