Welch joined General Electric as a junior chemical engineer in 1960. In the year 1972, he was appointed as the vice president of GE. Then, in 1977, he worked as senior vice president. He promoted as vice chairman in 1979. In the year 1981, he became the youngest chairman and CEO of GE.
In 1991 and 1992, he worked as Chairman of the Business Council.
After retirement from General Electric, he served as an adviser in Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, a private equity firm. He also worked as the chief executive of IAC, Barry Diller.
On January 25, 2006, Welch gave his name to Sacred Heart University’s College of Business, which became renowned as the “John F. Welch College of Business”. Since September 2006, he has been teaching MBA students at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
In 2009, Welch established the Jack Welch Management Institute. This institute offers executive MBA degree via online. In 2011, Strayer University acquired the institute.
